One of my biggest fascinations lately has been the role of creativity in business.
I’m not talking about creative accounting. That can cause serious legal and ethical problems. You just don’t want to go there.
Everyone in business has creativity. The evidence is that the best jobs people will have 10 years from now haven’t been invented yet. Business is about creating something.
An example will show what I mean. My mom is a veterinary surgeon. She claims she isn’t really creative. But then I asked about how she solves some problems with the animals she works on. It turns out she does have to be creative to solve some of the problems she runs across.
That’s when the topic of this post came to me. She has years of experience as a surgeon and has always read and attended the continuing education classes for her profession. She can use creativity to save so many animals because of her long experience and expertise. That gave me this epiphany:
Expertise enables creativity!
If you started a business, you did so because you have expertise in some area. You may be a landscaper, an architect, a dentist, or a cook. You felt like you could fulfill your dreams better working for yourself than you could as an employee. So you ventured out on your own.
Just because you are the world’s best pastry chef, it doesn’t mean you know anything about running a fine bakery. Your expertise is in the kitchen. If you want your business to give you freedom – instead of slavery – you need to know more than how to make delicious breads and desserts. You need to know business. You can save a botched recipe with the right ingredients, but can you look at your cash flow statement to know what makes your business money and what loses it?
That’s why I have a recommended reading tab. To solve your leadership, marketing, or strategy problems, you need expertise in those areas. You won’t need to be a PhD, but you need to know how to solve problems and why to make decisions that determine the destiny of your business.
And yes. If you need to integrate these things into your business plan, we can help with that. Just click on the Contact Us tab to leave a message and see how we can help you make your business better.
