I couldn't agree with you more, my employee bought a new phone about 3 months ago and lately that's all he's been doing is text messaging his friend I have caught him a few times and told him, if I catch him again, I will write him up.
What do you have to do to get a full 8 hours out of your employees; this system is really screwed up. Heck if we got caught evening talking to friend during normal business hours there where consequence. Now we have to fight with staff to do their job.
The lady that was texting while a dog was having seizures, personally I would have grab the "Freaking phone" right-out of her hands. Especially in a life or death situation. That individual should have been dismissed from her job until further notice.
We are not here paying people to text 20 to 30 times a day, as a Boss I have it to, but my phone never leaves my purse until I am out of the office.
I don't have enough time in a day to be playing with texting.
We need stricter laws and enforce them during business hours. If the employee gets caught, once, or even twice they get written up, the third time they should be dismissed without pay for 2 days. There are thousands of people that need jobs today and take their jobs seriously. We need to put a stop to all of this. Here we’re in the 20th century and everything changes from generations to generations.

Steve, the SBA is a great resource, but sometimes new entrepreneurs need more help than just being pointed in the right direction. That's where one-on-one consulting can make a difference. As I have helped business owners take their business plan from a template to a actionable plan, they gain new confidence in where they are headed and in the success they will have.

Kyle, thanks for the endorsement. Hopefully this isn't just good info that would have helped a few years ago, but actually makes a difference in your business today as you continue to work on your business plan.

Actually, employees who quit are not supposed to receive unemployment. They have to be fired or downsized. The entitlement mentality is dangerous, though. How much talent has been wasted by people sitting around waiting for handouts when they could have gone out and made something great?

It is my opinion that employees are protected well by the state and federal government. If they quit, they get unemployment. If they get fired, they are awarded someone from the state to defend their unlawful termination suit on the taxpayer's dime. The biggest complaint I have about employees is their "entitlement" attitude. They feel like they are "owed" a job and don't have to earn it. Don't get me wrong, I have some tremendous employees and treat them very well. It is too bad I have to spend so much money defending why I let people go that I can't reward them more often.

Tony,

Great website. I have actually gone and read nearly all your posts and find the information very accurate. In fact, I wish I had been able to read this before I started my own business 5 years ago.

In this most recent post when referring to borrowing/lending money you said, "I’m not worried about them losing money, I become worried about missing the opportunity for them to make me money." I have found that to be the case. It didn't seem that anyone was interested in loaning me money when I was trying to raise capital, but now that we are somewhat successful people come out of the woodwork to be involved in what we are doing.

Great insight and entrepreneurship advice.

Nice article! I agree with your thoughts about this. Our company found the local SBA office extremely helpful when creating a business plan. There are a lot of very credible resources available to people willing to take the time to look for them.
